Case Study: Becky's story

image: Becky at homeIn 2013, Becky was forced to leave her home after her partner’s violence escalated. Fearing for her young children’s safety Becky had no choice but to flee her home.

Becky was found accommodation by her local authority but she and her children were sleeping on the floor.  Having nothing more than a few clothes and a blow up bed, Becky was fearful her children may be taken into care.  They were referred to the Neighbourhood Furniture Store (NFS) and things quickly improved for them.

Becky’s confidence was shattered so the NFS staff supported her, selecting furniture for her family so they could start turning their new house into a home and begin to rebuild their lives.

Store manager Everlyn was moved to tears by Becky’s story and personally selected items for the young mum. Becky was over the moon to receive beds for herself and her children as well as wardrobes, a sofa, tables and chairs.

Becky says: “Everlyn was so kind she even gave me extra items for nothing, a hoover, rug and pictures, it all helped make our house feel comfy.”

“I had nothing and was so grateful for what I was given. They even arranged delivery for the day after we came into the store as they knew we had nothing.”

“Five years on and I’m still eternally grateful for what the Neighbourhood Furniture Store did for me and my babies.”

Help us make a difference to more people like Becky and her family.

Case study: Kelly's story

image: Kelly at home“The friendly service and knowledge has been amazing and I’m eternally grateful. We are slowly decorating each room and with limited funds, the Neighbourhood Furniture Store has made this more realistic.”

18 months ago Kelly fled from her home. She was escaping an abusive husband who’d left the family in a house with no gas or electricity. Kelly and her children had to move quickly so were unable to take much with them. Kelly was helped by family and found temporary accommodation. After eight weeks she was re housed by her local Council.

When they moved into their new house, Kelly and her children didn’t have much, she explains: “Friends were generous giving us some items but there was a lot we needed. It was really hard and I just wanted to make it nice for the kids.”

A friend suggested Kelly try the Neighbourhood Furniture Store, and she was really glad she did.

“When you’ve been in a relationship like I have you lose all your self confidence. I know it might sound silly but deciding what furniture I needed was a really big thing for me. The staff at the store couldn’t help me enough, they are so polite and knowledgeable and they’ve found just the right furniture for my home.

I suffer from Fibromylalgia so I needed a sofa that was at the right height for me. The staff at the store helped find just the thing. They arranged for it to be delivered and did everything for me. And I really love my new sofa, it’s compact but it seats all of us so we can be together as a family.”

The affordable prices the store offers have meant Kelly can slowly replace all the furniture in her home.

“I was able to buy a dining table and chairs, so we can all sit down to dinner all together. It’s not just the main things you need like beds, I also got a bathroom cabinet, it means I can keep medicine out of reach of my son.”

The support she’s received from the Neighbourhood Furniture Store has meant that Kelly has been able to make a new start with her children. She feels she’s been able to turn her house into a home.
